Town Hall Wroclaw

Rynek is a Wrocław must-see regardless of the season or year. It is where the heart of the city beats. In the summer the beer gardens burst at the seams and in the winter Rynek hosts the most beautiful Christmas Market in Poland. There are three the most popular landmarks in the Market Square: the pillory located in front of Feniks – the oldest department store in Wrocław, the fountain, and the Aleksander Fredro monument

Hansel and Gretel houses

In the northwest corner of the Rynek, there are two tiny and charming houses of altarists – guardians of the altar in the nearby St. Elizebeth’s church). They are called Jaś and Małgosia (Hansel and Gretel). Rynek is surrounded by 60 tenements. Have a look at the tenement house at number 5. One of the windows there is painted. Can you guess which one?

There are several great restaurants in Wrocław Market Square. Our favorites are Vega with vegan cuisine, Wok In with Thai cuisine and Bernard with Czech cuisine. Piwnica Świdnicka, one of the oldest gastronomic establishments in Europe, operated until recently in the basement of the Town Hall. We hope it will be opened soon!

Eleven streets lead to Rynek and each of them has its own story and interesting things to see. It is worth going down Więzienna Street, Kuźnicza Street and Świdnicka Street. Right next to Market Square there is a Solny Square, where you can buy fresh flowers 24 hours a day. There is also a Paloma café with delicious coffee!

Wroclaw things to do

Ostrów Tumski is the oldest and most picturesque part of Wrocław. It is a favorite walking place among locals and tourists. In the center of the island, there is the Archcathedral of St. John the Baptist called “the mother of churches” of Lower Silesia.

The Tumski Bridge between Piaskowa Island and Ostrów is a popular meeting place and tourist attraction. For over a dozen years, couples have been hanging padlocks on the bridge as a symbol of their love. If you have the opportunity to walk around Ostrów in the early evening, you can have a unique opportunity to meet a lighthouse keeper, who wears a black cape and black pants. The lighthouse keeper personally lights gas lamps on the island, and he is very popular among tourists.

Walking around Ostrów Tumski, you can enter one of the small gardens and sit on a bench with a view of the Oder. If you want to relax surrounded by green scenery visit the Botanical Garden in Wrocław. Don’t miss the Archdiocesan Museum full of monuments of sacred art. Among them, you can find the “Book of Henryków” from the 13th-14th century, with the first sentence written in Polish.

Legend about the Dumpling Gate

Near the cathedral, there is a charming Dumpling Gate, which is associated with an interesting legend. The story is about a man who loved his wife’s cooking, especially Silesian dumplings. After her death, he did not eat because of despair. One day the man dreamed of his wife who promised him to provide a daily portion of dumplings, but he is not allowed to eat all, and at the bottom of the pot, there must always be one dumpling. After waking up, the man saw a pot and tried to eat all the dumplings, however, the last dumpling kept escaping back to the pot, and finally escaped to the gate.

Then, dwarf WrocLovek who lives at Odrzańska Street, near the tenement houses Jaś and Małgosia. He holds a heart symbolizing love for Wrocław.
